Team POLAND
Neighbour to the East
For some years, a great deal has been done by Germany’s neighbour to the East to encourage their youth. The Polish association has itself organised large U21 tournaments, especially in the hockey highspot Poznan. However, real success has so far eluded them. Poland was not even one of the 16 qualifying nations in the 2001 World Championships. Their fourteenth place in Rotterdam in 2005 made them the lowest placed European team. Only Chile and Mexico, where hockey is still being developed, were lower placed. So it showed some success when the Polish U21 achieved sixth place last year in the European Championships. This was their second-best result since the first U21 European Championships in 1976 in Hamburg, when Poland came fourth.
